GPS/GSM FLite tags on penguins in New Zealand

The University of Otago are attaching FLite GPS wildlife telemetry tags from GPS Collars Ltd to yellow eyed penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) at several locations in New Zealand.

This study is investigating the dispersal mechanisms of supplementary-fed (rehabilitated) chicks away from their release site, and aims to identify important at-sea areas for juvenile penguins. This dispersal study is part of a larger project at University of Otago to determine the effectiveness of supplementary feeding on yellow-eyed penguin chicks and subsequent parental survival, based on analysis of existing data.

The project has been made possible through a grant from the Ornithological Society of New Zealand and donations raised through crowdfunding.
